Community Engagement Festival @ LUC

Tuesday, June 2, 2015
3pm @ 301 Anna van buErenplein, THE HAGUE

On Tuesday, June 2, Leiden University College will celebrate the completion of its inaugural Community Project course on "Multicultural Education in The Hague."  Please join us to learn about the interesting work LUC students have been doing in local schools, and to find out how YOU can get involved with this and other exciting projects in the city of The Hague.

We will begin with words of welcome from Prof. dr. Jos Schaeken, Dean of LUC, and Ingrid van Engelshoven, Deputy Major of the City of The Hague and alderman for the Knowledge Economy, International Affairs, Youth and Education.

Next, we'll move on to a four-part programme:

Student Panel on multicultural education

Dr. Ann Marie Wilson will introduce the Community Project course and LUC students will present on the experiences they have had as volunteers at the Johan de Witt School and at the College St. Paul. They will also talk to us about the independent research they have done on issues surrounding multicultural education, migration, and diversity in the Netherlands and beyond.

Volunteer Fair

There will also be a Volunteer Fair in collaboration with LUC-V, where you can meet up with local organisations that can use your help in The Hague. Participants include the Red Cross, the Dutch Council for Refugees, the Johan de Witt School, and many others.

Keynote on education

And we will host a keynote address by Jelmer Evers, the Dutch nominee for the 2015 Global Teacher Prize. Mr. Evers teaches history at the innovative UniC school in Utrecht and writes, speaks, and consults widely about the politics of education. At 5pm, he will talk to us about "Flipping the System": building a positive future for secondary education in the Netherlands. A lively Q&A will follow.

food, drink, & music!

Finally, all of this will wrap up with a festive borrel at AkBar, LUC's student bar.

The festival is free and open to the public, but please register so we know to expect you.
You can also download the poster for the event.
